Cromford Railway Station
JG Speedfit’s Underfloor Heating System has been installed in the Grade 2-listed Cromford Railway Station in Derbyshire. The principal platform building dates back to 1874 but spent many years neglected and unused, until the Arkwright Society acquired the lease on the building in 2007. They have now completed the restoration of the building, which used to house the waiting rooms and ticket office. The JG Speedfit Underfloor Heating System was specified after a very successful previous installation in the Cromford canal wharf building. The Cromford Mill is the world’s first successful water powered cotton-spinning mill, built by Sir Richard Arkwright in 1771. The JG Speedfit Underfloor Heating System is simple to install, but Peter Rowntree, JG Speedfit’s North East Regional Technical Manager, offered technical support during the installation.
The Speedfit system offers unlimited control over both temperature and time offered by underfloor heating will bring big energy savings when compared with a traditional radiator system. Although the time was controlled centrally, the system will still allow individual room control, by increasing the temperature on the room thermostat when the underfloor heating system is off. The thermostat will call for heat from the boiler and the pump will pump hot water around the circuit increasing the room’s temperature, without affecting other rooms in the building.
In a building with high ceilings such as the refurbished railway station underfloor heating will bring cost savings compared to radiators. By only heating the space approximately two metres off the floor means no energy is wasted heating vast ceiling spaces, potentially reducing energy cost compared to radiators.
Carpet was specified as the floor covering in the offices to make the rooms as inviting as possible. Although the JG Speedfit Underfloor Heating System works equally as well with ceramic tiles, vinyl and laminate floorings.
